Sorry I am so late this week to do this you'all but it has been one long week. I had applied to teach at a new technology magnet in our district, and had a great interview, only to loose the spot over internal politics. I was very bold and ambitious with my ideas for types of technology, but basically I found out that no matter what I went in and said, I was never going to get the position.
I find that I have a hard time finding where to draw a line and call it an OLE or a WBL. When I looked at the descriptions of most of the OLEs in the text, most of them seemed simulation based, though the simulations had a great degree of learner choice. Things like geometer's sketchpad I wouldn't have thought of because to me they are a type of modeling software. I suppose just like anything else, there are degrees of OLE and one requirement is that there are at least some choices a learner can make.

Rachel-
If you want snowy winters, you should try Chicago. LOL. It's going to be 60 degrees out today and we still have remnants of snow from the last storm.
It's really kewl that you are going to try Camtasia Studio. I found it very easy to use. Another piece of software I got from by web tool developer is http://camstudio.org
It is very similar to Camtasia Studio but it is free.
The distinctions between the two different learning environments are unclear; ambiguity seems to be a plus in my readings this week. It is probably more about place on the continuum. Did you see the continuum regarding teaching styles, where curator has been placed to the left of facilitator on Dr. T’s blog? That was new to me, but makes sense since facilitator may be taking a bit of legitimate criticism.
Hi Rachel,
I understand about the internal politics during interviews. Sorry that you lost that spot.
I had a an interview in my district this past Friday. I informed the interview panel that I intended to use a blogging site to provide information and weekly updates to parents and students. The interview panel acted as it was a bad thing to use blogs. That probably comes from all the negative attention from places like myspace.com has received from the media. One of them asked me how would I keep it confidential. I wanted to say that we were not going to discuss any National Security issues on the blog. However, I just stated that it will be used as a place to communicate weekly goals and objectives with parents and students.
Have a great weekend!
I am SO happy with camtasia. It is awesome! I am going to try and see if our Tech Specialist can get out district to buy it - they want us to podcast SO badly - if not, I am going to take my supply money I get and buy it this summer so I have it to use next year.
Rachel - I'm so sorry to hear about the job! Internal politics are the worst. I've seen some jobs get posted that they know who they're going to hire, but they go through the motions of bringing in and interviewing people. I wish those jobs had some type of code in them to warn people not to waste their time because they already decided who was going to get that spot.
I have not used Geometer's Sketchpad nor many other programs in my district's toolbox. This class has inspired me to try to use the tools in my class. It seems that many tools are course-related and require creativity to find cross-curricular uses.
