Week Four Reflection: Blogs in K-12

As we take a minute to set back and reflect on blogs and wikis, as a middle school teacher, I yearn to use them, but at the same time I know that at some point some child would post something inappropriate and ruin it for everyone. We have used the chatroom feature in blackboard, because we can delete anything inappropriate. The thing I don't like about being limited to blackboard is I can't get as much interaction between my students and outside experts as I would like - especially if we are doing an ongoing project. Therefore, I think the question I would like to ponder as we all get used to this format, is what measures can be used to make blog effective and useful in a k-12 format.

Rachel,

The little trash can icon on our comments here in blogger allows deletion; so, you could operate the same way with oversight as in the discussion board. You should also be able to set it so that all comments go through approval. I'm not sure how you would run that on blogs for each student, but you could operate a class blog that way.

Hi Rachel,

I use blackboard with my high school online class and the features of blackboard are very limited compared to blogs and wikis. At times, our server prevents us from being more creative with blackboard which is frustrating.

Have a great weekend!

Rachel,

I am thinking about it this way, there are many teachers of middle and high school kids that have made it work, so there must be at least one way to safely post! I am anxious to see the effect on my students when their work goes "public". I am hoping for great things, and therefore trying to set that up for them.
